Perception in Branding

Perception in Branding Perception in Branding Home›Marketing Posts›Perception in Branding Marketing PostsA mammoth challenge faces modern markets in the contemporary business world in the quest to convince the consumer market to buy their products. This has led to a booming advertising industry. Numerous strategies have been deployed by this industry to win the consumers in accepting a particular product. Efforts have been made by companies to keep at par with the latest advertising dynamics. The challenge becomes bigger if the brand been advertised has multi-cultural market consumption. This is because branding involves the choice of colors, sounds and scents that are not universal to all the cultures. The sole goal of every marketer is to achieve loyalty of consumers for its product or brand. This involves developing an emotional attachment to the brand by appealing to the five senses of the human beings. This process, however, derailed by several factors as discussed in this paper. Possible remedie s to such factors will also be highlighted later in the paper. The process of creating consumer loyalty to a particular product or brand is a complex process. It entails coming up with a brand that is adaptable, transferable and protectable. In order to achieve this, marketers make use of elements that will live long-lasting effects to the consumer to make them link to the products easily. Key among the factors that marketers consider in designing a product is color. This is because it has different sociological connotations across cultures and if used inconsiderately may result to low sales. The other factor is numbers. There are marketers who like to sell their products in specific groups like in pairs or fours. Just like colors, numerology is very important in marketing because different numbers have different associations in different cultures. This calls for informed decisions in designing advertisements for brands. This will in turn affect how the consumers perceive such produc ts and consequently their decisions to buy them or not (Hellriegel, 2007).Perception is the procedure in which people choose, put in order, deduce and react to information from the world around them. The information is gathered from the five senses of smell, sight, touch, taste and hearing. The perceptual process consists of six elements- objects in the person’s environment, observation, perceptual selection perceptual organization, interpretation and response. The perceptual process is, however, not altogether unmarred. It may lead to gross errors or distortions that may affect a consumption of a particular product (Scribid.com, 2011).The most common types of perceptual distortion are stereotyping, projection, the halo effect, self-fulfilling prophecy and cross-cultural misperceptions. Stereotyping is a tendency to attribute characteristics to an individual based on the assessment of the group the individual belongs. In branding, it involves having a generalized perception about the brand being marketed or the consumers by either the buyer or the marketer. Stereotyping in the side of the marketer can be advantageous as well as disadvantageous (Ehret, 2008). If a second hand car dealer despises his work because the public assigns that notion to his job, this will lead to demoralization and fall in sales. On the other hand, a dealer of Lexus or Mercedes cars enjoys a ‘superior- quality’ stereotype from both the marker and the consumer and hence enhancing the sales. Stereotyping results to problems as the generalizations do not apply equally to all members of the group. The halo effect is a tendency to use a general impression based on one or a few characteristics of an individual or product to judge other characteristics of that individual or product. This distortion is very common in marketing. For instance, a marketer may realize that a particular brand sold highly in a certain region or with a particular group. In an effort to expand the business, the p roducers of that company may market the brand in other regions expecting similar returns because they had succeeded earlier. This may lead to drastic fall inn sales if the consumers are comfortable with the product (Kardes et al., 2010).Another perception inaccuracy is projection. This is an assumption that others share one’s thoughts, feelings and characteristics. This leads to a one-way communication. In the branding arena, this may be experienced if branders assume what is best for them suits the consumers. They end up projecting their preferences at the expense of those of the customers. If a customer’s taste is not prioritized, this has direct impact on the sales, as they will opt to other brands where they can get their desires honored. The last perceptual distortion to be discussed in this paper is the self-fulfilling prophecy or the Pygmalion effect. This is the tendency to create or find in another situation or individual that which one expected to find. The Pygmalion ef fect may be caused by the distortions discussed above. Sometimes, consumers expect certain behaviors from other consumers. This may be regardless of whether these behaviors are actually occurring or not. This may affect their decisions to purchase a particular brand.Having discussed the different perceptual distortions, it is evidently clear that these errors lead to misundersting a brand, which may affect its popularity in the consumer market. There are a number of remedies that may be used to curb this menace. To begin with, a marketer needs to gather information about the customers’ behaviors and attitudes before making decisions that are personal and which may not resonator with those of the customers. After gathering the information, the brander or marketer should draw informed conclusions from the observations in order to ensure they are valid (Scribid.com, 2011). This will aid in determining facts and assumptions to base the perceptions. It is also crucial to differentiate the various aspects of the individual consumers’ behavior instead of grouping the individuals on superficial grounds. Lastly, it would be paramount to identify one’s genuine feelings and ensure they do not project them to others especially with the branders.

Who Is The Father Of Existentialism - 1067 Words

Kierkegaard, regarded by many as the father of existentialism, came up with three stages a person must go through in order to become one’s true self. Like Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic stages, one must be successful at each stage in order to go on to the next one, if one does not, the likelihood of that person be well-rounded is highly unlikely. In order to find one’s true self and live to their full potential one must go through three stages which include; aesthetics, ethics and religious stages. Aesthetics deals with beauty and art, whereas ethics coincides with following the rules and helping the fellow man and religion is fairly self- explanatory, and includes making a personal relationship with God. Aesthetic closely ties in with the beginning of both Augustine and Kierkegaard’s early life; wild and rampant with limited cares about others. Augustine’s early life included a concubine that would bear him a son in later years, while Kierkegaardâ €™s early life included sickness and terrible loneliness – both of which are not the proudest moments of a man’s life but nevertheless increase their wisdom. Aesthetics stage combats boredom as the goal is to live life by the seat of one’s pants. Limited planning and doing things for the fun of it make the soul happy. To pursue beauty above all limits the ability to form deep relationships as well as an empathic heart that cares for others. Consequently, the second stage of finding one’s true self is ethics, which at many timesShow MoreRelatedEssay on Existentialism in Night1014 Words   |  5 PagesExistentialism in Night In his essay â€Å"Existentialism†, Jean Paul Sartre discusses the main beliefs of existentialism. Stereotypes of Africa How Much Do You Know - 669 Words

The word stereotype can be defined as â€Å"a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Stereotypes can be found everywhere, from schools to our views on the world. There are many stereotypes about Africans and Africa as a whole, and just like a majority of all stereotypes, they couldn’t be more wrong. One of the stereotypes about Africa is that it’s a country. It has often been argued that Africa isn’t a continent when, in actuality, it is the second largest continent with fifty-three countries and a variety of ethnic diversity. This stereotype isn’t only ingrained into the minds of children, but into the minds of many adults as well, including former Vice President and Republican running mate, Sarah Palin. A second stereotype is that all Africans lack intelligence. In reality, the African system of learning, is far more advanced than the American system of learning. A perfect example would involve le arning a foreign language. A majority of American schools begin learning a foreign language from middle school through high school. In Africa, many children in elementary school have mastered the basics of learning foreign languages; the languages include, English, French, and the languages of the other African countries (Twi, Ga, Ewe, Swahili, Fulani, Hausa etc.). Hindu Religion And Women Free Essays

Hindu goddesses are traditionally conceived to be strong figures, even indomitable ones. By comparing his female characters to these goddesses, Rushdie attributes them with a force of character. He perceives India as a matriarchy, where maternal power, energy, and love is the means to social cohesion. We will write a custom essay sample on Hindu Religion And Women or any similar topic only for you Order Now (Jennifer Takhar) Durga, the washerwoman who had nursed Saleems son in his sickness, is an important figure in Saleems life. As we understand from the description of her (pg:445), she is a powerful woman who is an opposite image of the docile Indian woman. She may be representing the power that is repressed in these women. Saleem fears her as she symbolizes the hope that he has lost. Her name, even before I met her, had the smell of new things; she represented novelty, beginnings, the advent of new stories, events, complexities, and I was no longer interested in anything new. (pg:445) She is again the one who foretold Saleem’s death. So, these kind of women as witches inspired fear in Saleem. Like Durga, Parvati-the-witch, who is Shivas wife, is another important figure. She causes in creating their child which is necessary for the continuation. Mother was seen as a nation. There is parallelism between continuity of nation through having children. Women have roles in productivity; that is why they are important. Parvati acts as somebody restoring order. She helps Saleem return to Delhi by using her magic basket, making him invisible. Parvati reminded Saleem of things he had tried to put out of his mind. (pg:389) So, we can say that she influenced Saleem as other women, as being representator of a nation. When we come to other women in Saleems life, for example Mary Pereira. She is the one who gives birth to Saleem; she creates him in both biological sense and metaphorical sense. She changes the babies and at the same time fates. Out of guilt, she attaches her whole destiny to Saleems life by becoming his caretaker. She also influences the class positions of the babies. (Saleem and Shiva) The pickling process which is a process of preservation, linked to preservation and continuity of traditions metaphorically, is significant. This food process is under control of females and it is an important source of authority and identity for the women. It is the preservation of the past. The womens way is practical, oral; it is a way of transmitting tradition we can say. Pickling process is only a symbol of this transmission. So, Mary P. , like the other women in Saleems life has great effect on Saleem. Reverend Mother, on the other hand, who is the bride behind perforated sheet turns out to be the head of the family. She is also very powerful. She becomes the head after the marriage. She preserves identity of the nation. She is like the other women; asserts her authority in cooking. Her food, for example, revives Ahmed Sinai after freeze. She uses food as battleground where she wages her battles against her husband. We see the monitoring of food, so simple and practical but can influence men. It is this simplicity of mothers, their affection influnces Saleem. To Saleem women, like India, is nothing without its past. no escape from past acquaintance. What you were is forever who you are. (pg:368) And this connection to past is through these women. They are the ones who create nation and preserve it like the pickles. Amina, Saleems mother, changes and influences his life also. He sees her naked in the bathroom and witnesses her unfaithfullness on the phone. All this causes him to have some kind of explosion in his head and that explosion causes him to hear voices in his head. It is the birth of Midnights Children.. He sees mother, motherland, the nation-India-,earth is not pure as he identifies women with the nation. Identification is between the country and the body of the woman, especially mother. He sees the body of woman as the country and he should protect country as well as honor of mother. But seeing her motheris not pure, the discovery of impurity in mother will bring crisis in his head- the multiplicity of nation-. The body is homogeneous as anything. Indivisible, a one-piece suit, a sacred temple, if you will. It is important to preserve this wholeness. (pg:237) Padma, whom Saleem exchanges opinions about how to tell a story is another significant figure. While he writes, his illiterate listener, Padma, sits beside him showing her emotional responses to his stories, questioning their credibility. When Padma shows interest on her face, Saleem speeds on telling his story. She keeps questioning what is next.. She encourages him to write which is the only gift Sallem has for continuity, preservation. Padma is important as a caretaker; providing warmth, food, human kindness to Saleem. She is India for him, connected to all country as a mother. She has earthly characteristic. She emerges as an earthly, stable, real, practical woman that ties her to the motherland. That is why, according to me, she is the most important character in this novel. But although she is a preserver for Saleem, she unwillingly poisons him by feeding him with things she thinks hell be ni love with her. It is a poison which is also a cure; both nourishing, reviving, perserving and also poisonous, destructive. She is like India creating him. And ceratinly Padma is leaking into me. As history pours out of my fissured body, my lotus is quietly dripping in, with her down-to-earthery, and her paradoxical superstition, her contradictory love of the fabulous (pg:38) In short, women had important role in Saleems life. They are the mothers, the creators of men. If they were not on earth, no continuity would take place; there would be no world. Saleem is afraid of them also because although they create him as nation creates men; they also prepare the fall of men. They both give significance and at the same time destroys. They can take away the identity as in Saleem. Saleem is the nation also as he creates; he writes. He tries to create meaning and form. And women help Saleem create himself, his identity like the nation does to all human beings. But it can also unmake people. The women try to hold on to past and keep it safe as past is a country from which we have all migrated; that its loss is part of our humanity. (Imaginary Homelands; Essays and Criticism 1981-1991. London: Granta Books, 1991) And this statement teaches the migrants that reality is an artifact and it doesnt exist until it is made and it can be made well or badly, and it can also be unmade, like women did to Saleem. When we come to the question of why White Castle didnt give place for women might be because the childhood theme ook great importance in the book. For example, the grandfathers looking for his childhood at homeThat is why it gives much space for the child king. There is the continuous looking for the simple, untouched ide before recognizing sexuality, leaving the mother, to have potency. There is again the fear to lose the pureness, wholeness of the childhood. And because of it there are the speeches in this novel that tells about the childhood naughtiness. It is like the fear of the child. And if we relate this to the women ,as we said women are the creators and they are connected to past, there is no escape from it and when it involves naughtiness and things like a child fears. So, as the Hodja did, there is both an escape from it and at the same time looking for the past innocence. That is why there is no sexuality with women in the book. As they are feared, they can unmake men. The dangerous influence of women is not given permission in the book; only limited and innocent ones are implicitly told. Consequently, women and sexuality are barred and not given much importance as in Midnights Children happened the contrast. According to me, it is because it is known how influential women are and can be dangerous in creating. And when you want something wholly new and create your own identity, as the characters in White Castle wanted, it is not a good idea to include women and sexuality. The women can bring fall of men while creating them. How to cite Hindu Religion And Women, Essay examples

Teen Suicide Essays (1431 words) - Psychiatric Diagnosis

Teen Suicide Teen Suicide is a major killer of teenagers today. It is the third leading cause of death in all teens ages 15-19 and the second leading cause of death in ages 19-24. Verbalizing about this more gives ways to help prevent teen suicide, such as identifying disorders they may have and providing them with the proper treatment be fore it gets out of hand. The hard part is identifying the disorders. The only people that can really identify them is family and close friends, and in many cases people many not know the seriousness of it or fear that it might just be true. Another problem is that if you are not educated in the areas of mind it may be a bit harder to identify the problem. The most common symptoms that lead to suicide are depression, anxiety disorders and substance abuse. Depression is a mood disorder characterized by over whelming feelings of sadness, lack of interest in activities, and often times excessive guilt or feelings of worthlessness. Depression is not something that a person can help and if they could, they would not even want to. It does no good to tell someone who is depressed and has thoughts of suicide that, Things really are not that bad; that just indicates to them that you can not see nor understand what they are going through. Most people in these situations want help but they may discourage obtaining it from someone due to the embarrassment of the issue. Making sure that your friends and family are all right but if they are not, they should be shown what help they can acquire by just coming forward. Anxiety disorders are a bit more complex but they need to be identified cause they can be dangerous. Anxiety is a disorder where anxiety is a characteristic feature or the avoidance of anxiety motivates abnormal behavior and can not function in everyday life because the anxiety is too great. The easiest of the three to explain is Substance abuse. This is the pattern of drug use that diminishes the ability to fulfill responsibilities at home or at work or even school, that leads in repeated use of drug menacing situations, which results to legal difficulties related to narcotic use. Ultimately chronic abuse of alcohol and drugs may lead to death; About 100,000 Americans die each year as a result of alcohol with other drugs including heart failure, pneumonia, automobile accidents, and suicide. The highest risk for suicide due to heavy drinking is boys 17-19 who is depressed and drinks a lot. Substance abuse as all of the disorders are very dangerous if not treated and in some substance abuse cases it gets out of which results in problems with the law and even violence may occur. Each disorder mentioned (depression, anxiety, and substance abuse) are all leading causes to teen suicide and the more society becomes involved the less teens take their own lives because no one is showing them another route. Treatment significantly reduces teen suicide but the actual treatment itself could be modified. They do confidential screening of high school student for risk factors such as previous suicide attempts. To say that these testers know if they had previous suicide attempts or if they are just lying is just an unrealistic statement. The few students that do come forward it will work for but what about all the others that did not speak out. One way of detecting this early is that all schools make the students go to the school psychologist from early adolescents all the way through high school. This is so that the psychologist know of him/her and the students understand that you dont have to be crazy or mentally challenged to go and speak to someone if something is disturbing them. It is always a nice thing as a teenager to know that some one stable is always there to talk and help you the best they know how. Start to teach the positive effects of the school psychologist at an early age can only repair the communication gap. By the time the thoughts of suicide come about they have someone that can first notice if they have the symptoms of any

Frederick Douglas Comparative Essay Essays

Malcolm X/ Frederick Douglas Comparative Essay Essays Malcolm X/ Frederick Douglas Comparative Essay Essay Malcolm X/ Frederick Douglas Comparative Essay Essay Basil Al Bader 99629 English Composition I Contras/Comparative Essay Final Draft Malcolm X / Frederick Douglas Malcolm X and Frederick Douglas were two main figures of the black community in the United States. Both of them were self-educated. Both of them faced challenges to achieve their education and both of them had impacted by the growth of their knowledge. We will see in this essay how they learned, the challenges they faced while trying to learn and what impact learning had on them. For both Malcolm X and Frederick Douglas, learning to read was a whole process that took time. The first point that we will state is the environment in which they learned to read and write. In 1946,Malcolm X was sentenced eight to ten years in prison. This is where his interest for reading and writing took birth. It is alone in prison that Malcolm opened his first book, which for a matter was a dictionary. In his biography, Malcolm explains the frustration he constantly felt while trying to express his feelings in letter that he wrote. It is this frustration that led him to request a dictionary. At that point, Malcolm did not realize so many words existed â€Å"I spent two days just riffling ncertainly through the dictionary pages. I’d never realized so many words existed! † (211) It is at that point that he started to copy the dictionary. After copying the first page, he’d read his notes out loud over and over. By this process, Malcolm created for himself a great way to learn â€Å" I woke up next morning, thinking about those words †¦ I could also remember what many of those words meant† (211). At that point Malcolm was launched â€Å"I was so fascinated that I went on †¦ I copied the dictionary’s next page†. Frederick Douglas process to learn was different. The first point that we will state is that Frederick was a slave. : He wasn’t initially allowed to learn to read and write. However, he had the chance to be introduced to that valuable knowledge by his mistress â€Å"Very soon after I went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Auld, she very kindly commenced to teach me the A, B, C† (Page given in class). Unfortunately, this situation didn’t last. Once his master realized what was going on, the mistress’s attitude changed. She actually stopped teaching him and for a matter of fact became an obstacle to his learning. From now on Frederick had to find an other way to learn. One way that he describes as being the most successful was to convert every sing id that he met into a teacher â€Å" The plan, which I adopted, and the one by which I was the most successful, was that of making friends of all the little white boys whom I met in the street† (130). This is the main reason of his success to learn reading â€Å"With their kindly aid †¦ I finally succeeded in learning to rea d†. The main difference that we can find between the ways they learned is that Malcolm X learned on his own, with no help while Frederick Douglas used the knowledge of his peers. Learning to read was a long process but it is important to say that it was a hard process. Both of them faced challenges while learning. Life in prison is ruled by very strict rules. Malcolm X had, in a certain way, to fight with theses rules. One of them was the light extinction. Every night, at ten P. M. , lights were turned of and night guards passes in front of every room every hour. Malcolm X describes this situation â€Å" †¦ every night at about ten P. M. I would be outraged with the ‘’lights out’’†¦ At one-hour interval at night guards paced past every room† (213). Determined to read Malcolm always founded a way to overcome theses challenges â€Å" Fortunately, right outside my door was a orridor light that cast a glow into my room. The glow was enough to read by †¦ each time I heard the approaching footsteps, I jumped into bed and feigned sleep†. Frederick Douglas had to face an other type of challenge. The first one was the mean behavior of his masters. As said previously, Frederick’s mistress’ s attitude changes. This changes is a major obstacle to his learning as he describes in his biography how violent her opposition was â€Å"The first step in her downward course was in her ceasing to instruct me †¦ She became even more violent in her opposition than her husband himself â€Å". Frederick had also the feeling of being watched, under surveillance, which he describes in his book â€Å" From this time I was most narrowly watched. If I was in a separate room †¦ I was sure to be suspected of having a book† (130). One thing that we can notice on both Malcolm X and Frederick Douglas is the impact that learning to read and write had on them. Both of them realized and understood more about the Black history, the injustice they had to face and the sadness of this situation. It also impacted on their self-esteem and self confidence. In â€Å"Learning to Read†, Malcolm X makes us understand how learning to read as positive for him and helped him to support his imprisonment as he says â€Å"Months passed without my even thinking about being imprisoned. In fact, up to then, I never had been so truly free in my life† (212). The passion he developed for reading made time timeless. Reading allowed him to understand the history of black people, which became the main subject of his readings â€Å"I never will forget how shocked I was when I began reading about slavery’s total horror †¦ Book after book showed me how the white man had brought upon the world’s black†¦peoples every variety of the suffering of exploitation† (214-215). For Malcolm X reading is the lement that will change his life forever as he says â€Å" reading opened to me †¦ reading had changed forever the course of my life† (217). We can definitely say that reading had a positive impact on Malcolm X. It opened his eyes and allowed him to gain confidence in himself and to become the great activist that we know. Frederick Douglas, in the contrary, makes us feel that he did not appreciate the consequences of that learning as much as Malcolm. Actually, reading and more specifically learning about the black history arouses in him a deep anger, as he says â€Å"The more I read, the more I was led to abhor and detest my enslav ers† (132). Frederick also describes the very deep sufferance he had by reading, â€Å"read had already come, to torment and sting my soul† (132). It is obvious that it is not much reading that hurt him but the knowledge he gets out of it. The impact was so negative; he really gives us the feeling that at some point he was going threw a real depression, â€Å"I envied my fellow-slaves for their stupidity †¦ I often found myself regretting my own existence, and wishing myself dead† (132). After comparing Malcolm X and Frederick Douglas, we can notice that both of them learned to read and write in their own way, that both of them had to face hallenges but the most important thing to notice is that both of them became very important figures of the black community in America and both of them played an important role in the evolution of the conditions of the black community. It is important to say that in both cases, reading opened doors for them. It allowed them to be more conscio us of their history and of course gives them more knowledge to understand it. I really think that the overall message that we should get from these two stories is the importance to educate ourselves, that this education that now a days, a lot of people still can’t access is one of the keys to freedom.

Quick Review of Radioactivity and Radiation

Quick Review of Radioactivity and Radiation Unstable atomic nuclei will spontaneously decompose to form nuclei with higher stability. The decomposition process is called radioactivity. The energy and particles which are released during the decomposition process are called radiation. When unstable nuclei decompose in nature, the process is referred to as natural radioactivity. When the unstable nuclei are prepared in the laboratory, the decomposition is called induced radioactivity. There are three major types of natural radioactivity: Alpha Radiation Alpha radiation consists of a stream of positively charged particles, called alpha particles, which have an atomic mass of 4 and a charge of 2 (a helium nucleus). When an alpha particle is ejected from a nucleus, the mass number of the nucleus decreases by four units and the atomic number decreases by two units. For example: 23892U → 42He 23490Th The helium nucleus is the alpha particle. Beta Radiation Beta radiation is a stream of electrons, called beta particles. When a beta particle is ejected, a neutron in the nucleus is converted to a proton, so the mass number of the nucleus is unchanged, but the atomic number increases by one unit. For example: 23490 → 0-1e 23491Pa The electron is the beta particle. Gamma Radiation Gamma rays are high-energy photons with a very short wavelength (0.0005 to 0.1 nm). The emission of gamma radiation results from an energy change within the atomic nucleus. Gamma emission changes neither the atomic number nor the atomic mass. Alpha and beta emission are often accompanied by gamma emission, as an excited nucleus drops to a lower and more stable energy state. Alpha, beta, and gamma radiation also accompany induced radioactivity. Radioactive isotopes are prepared in the lab using bombardment reactions to convert a stable nucleus into one which is radioactive. Positron (a particle with the same mass as an electron, but a charge of 1 instead of -1) emission isnt observed in natural radioactivity, but it is a common mode of decay in induced radioactivity. Bombardment reactions can be used to produce very heavy elements, including many which dont occur in nature.

Aquina Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Aquina Paper - Essay Example They are still important despite the overlapping with the other truths because it is vital that aside from philosophical science developed by human reason, there must be â€Å"theology† learned through divine revelation (Pojman & Vaughn 52-54). There are no justifications why such knowledge that could be learned through philosophical science, so long as it can be learned through natural reason, could not be learned through sacred science or theology either. Aquinas then explained that there are two forms of science, natural science and higher science. Sacred Doctrine is a science because it progresses from norms coming from higher science, specifically the science of God. He used the example of a musician who trusts in the teachings of a mathematician by reason of authority; the same can be said of sacred science, which is founded on knowledge from God’s revelation. He further argues that Sacred Doctrine is the noblest of sciences because it focuses on the noblest subject matter, which is God, and it offers the most graciously gratifying certainty because it expresses God’s authority. Also, Sacred Doctrine directs us to the noblest objective, which is toward eternal happiness with God. Sacred Doctrine is knowledge, which offers us the most profound and meaningful wisdom of our unending worth and guides us toward its attainment. These premises lead to a single conclusion-- therefore, an unmoved First Mover is real and existent. Whether these premises are valid, invalid, or sound require further examination. Validity is the value of being accurately, empirically, and concretely logical or justifiable; invalidity refers to a lack of factual reliability; soundness refers to the validity of the premises and conclusion. Through the Argument from Change, Aquinas illustrates that human reason has a role in Sacred doctrine not to verify or attest to the knowledge based on faith, but to shed light on â€Å"other things that are put forward in this doctrine†

The Turn of the Screw Essay -- Literary Analysis, Henry James

Superficially, Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw seems to reinforce the status quo of American literature as male, whereby men are viewed as having power over women leaving women to become mere objects. James creates a nameless female protagonist whose story is told through the guise of a male narrator. She becomes an object viewed by Douglas’s audience and is used simply as means for the master on Harley Street to avoid being bothered by his charges. She is then set up as naà ¯ve and love-struck, willing to do just about anything, including risking her own sanity, for the sake of keeping the master undisturbed. However, on closer examination, James actually creates a novella that subverts the traditional idea of men having power over women as it is the governess who has the final word in her story, not the male Douglas, and it is the male heir Miles who becomes the scapegoat leaving the governess free, â€Å"awfully clever and nice† (James 24). James’s unfinished frame tale creates frustration and confusion but his experiment with form also draws attention to what has largely been left unconscious. Through Douglas’s initial telling of the governess’s story she is reduced to a nameless object that they all raptly listen about rather than listen to. While at the start, Douglas does have power over the governess’s story, in the end it is the governess who has the final word and Douglas, who disappears after only the first seven pages, is never to be heard from again. James relinquishes power to the governess and allows her to participate as there is no need to return to the male voice once she takes over. Furthermore, as the governess does remain nameless throughout her own narrative this hardly is a power issues as both the master on... ...til finally â€Å"the air was clear† (116-117). In this way the governess is able to reverse the roles of passive/female and active/male as she denies Quint the power of his gaze and instead forces him to be the object of her gaze. Through his distortion of traditional male dominated structures and ideas, James is able to not only draw attention to the inequality of men’s power over women but he also uses the same devices to subvert this binary opposition. Through a distortion of the assumed patriarchal order the governess is able to adopt male characteristics in order to wrest back some of the power initially taken from her. Whether consciously or unconsciously James’s unfinished frame, disturbing death of Miles, and the disappearance of Quint’s ghost all point to a hidden power within the governess allowing her to survive long after her weaker male counterparts.

Inventory system Essay

INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE In today’s generation, we are engaged in highly computerized technology aiming to enhance individual lifestyle and most especially in the world of business. Certainly, there are plenty of small retail outlets, manufacturers, and other businesses that continue to rely on manual means of inventory tracking. Many companies and businesses are using sales monitoring and inventory systems for their success and growth. It is an effective way for monitoring sales and tracking different products and materials that are transferred in and out of a company’s warehouse or establishment. Moreover, a sales monitoring and inventory system promotes effective inventory control which ensures stocking the marketable and correct items in correct quantities. This system can help the company to avoid overstocking. When a company overstocks, money is wasted since procuring, storing, and accounting for unneeded items require time, space, and money which could have been used on more favourable and marketable assets. Having a developed system on sales monitoring and inventory makes the company more productive, efficient and convenient both to the company and its client. The sales and inventory system is meant to help the company employees and personnel to show customers more relevant items, hoping to expedite and increase the sales and most importantly to increase the profit of the company. With the aid of a sales monitoring and inventory systems, product management will be more consistent, reliable and efficient. Soundpoint Electronics and General Merchandise is a retail enterprise located at Brgy. Taboc, Borongan City, owned and managed by Mr. Crisanto Jose C. Labro. The computerization of their existing system is one of the primary reason why I conducted this study. I believed that with the computerized sales monitoring and inventory system, the problems met on the existing system will lessen and eventually eliminate. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM This study aims to solve the following existing manual sales monitoring and inventory problems: 1. Their present sales and inventory system is highly labor intensive because they require continuous monitoring on their business enterprise on a daily basis. 2. In terms of their sales transactions, the only record that they have are the customer’s official receipts and the problem with that is not all customer’s ask for an official receipt. They cannot determine how much their total earnings are at the end of the day because their records or the official receipts that they keep are not complete. 3. Lack of security in terms of their sales and their products. The business owner will find it difficult to see if some products are lacking or missing because they don’t have any written records about the available products. 4. Unreliable inventory and sales report. Because they don’t have a complete records of their inventory and sales transactions, they cannot produce any inventory or sales report that are really consistent and dependable. SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY This study was conducted at Soundpoint Electronics and General Merchandise located at Brgy. Taboc, Borongan City. This was conducted during the first semester of school year 2013 – 2014. The proposed sales monitoring and inventory system will: 1. This can no longer be highly labor intensive because with the aid of the sales monitoring and inventory system, they can monitor their sales and determine their lacking and unavailable products with the accurate reports that the system will generate. 2. After each customer transaction, the system will generate an official receipt and from then, they will be able to have a record and they can now determine their earnings. 3. Promote data security in terms of making the files always updated and easy to locate to provide a faster mean of doing the inventory. Unauthorized employees and persons will not be able to use the system unless under the supervision of the business enterprise owner. 4. Enable to produce accurate reports. A sales report to know the earnings of the business enterprise daily, weekly, monthly and yearly and an inventory report to see  what products are lacking and unavailable. However this sales monitoring and inventory system will not cover the following: 1. Payroll report of the employees. 2. Ordering of the needed / lacking products in the business enterprise. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY SOUNDPOINT ELECTRONICS AND GEN. MERCHANDISE This study will greatly contribute to the management in improving its level of sales and inventory management consistency, efficiency, accuracy and convenience in providing and giving services to owner, employees and customers. PROPONENT This study will help the proponent understand and appreciate the importance of the sales monitoring and inventory system for all business enterprises and establishments. This study will also improve her knowledge and experience in thesis writing as well as creating the Sales Monitoring and Inventory System. FUTURE RESEARCHERS This study will greatly help the future researchers to be aware on how important a sales and inventory systems in a certain business enterprise.  This study can be a reference to the future researchers who undertake studies in the same nature, also as contribution for other topics/areas. In addition to this, it will offer essential information and learning experiences to the future researchers, to expand their knowledge in the fields of System Analysis and Design and Software Development. And the study will also help the future researchers to gather significant information and to learn more about the problems that most business enterprises encountered in their sales and inventory management. CUSTOMERS The customers will be benefited in a way that their processes and  transactions in the business enterprise will be much easier and faster because of the computerized sales monitoring and inventory system. SUPPLIERS This study will also be helpful to the product suppliers in terms of in every product name, the name of the supplier or the company of the supplier will be seen. If the time comes that the products are already lacking in the business enterprise, the proprietor will know who the suppliers are and can contact the suppliers immediately. Can Sugar in the Gas Tank Really Kill Your Engine

Weve all heard the urban legend that pouring sugar into a cars gas tank will kill the engine. Does the sugar turn into a gooey sludge, gumming up the moving parts, or does it caramelize and fill your cylinders with nasty carbon deposits? Is it really the nasty, evil prank its made out to be? If the sugar got to the fuel injectors or cylinders, it would be bad business for you and your car, but that would be because any particulate will cause problems, not because of the chemical properties of sugar. Thats why you have a fuel filter. A Solubility Experiment Even if sugar  (sucrose) could react in an engine, it  doesnt dissolve in gasoline, so it cant circulate through the machine. This isnt just a calculated solubility  but rather is based on an experiment. In 1994, forensics professor  John Thornton at the University of California, Berkeley,  mixed gasoline with sugar marked with radioactive carbon atoms. He used a centrifuge to spin out the undissolved sugar and measured the radioactivity of the gas to see how much sugar dissolved. This turned out to be less than a teaspoon of sugar per 15 gallons of gas, which isnt enough to cause a problem. If you have less than a full tank of gas at the time its sugared, a smaller amount of  sucrose will dissolve because there is less solvent. Sugar is  heavier than gas, so it sinks to the bottom of the gas tank and decreases the amount of fuel you can add to the auto. If you hit a bump and some sugar gets suspended, the fuel filter will catch a small amount. You may need to change the fuel filter more often until the problem clears up, but its not likely the sugar would clog the fuel line.  If its a whole bag of sugar, then youll want to take the car in and have the gas tank removed and cleaned out, but this is not a difficult task for a mechanic and will run you about $150. Thats not good, but infinitely better than replacing an engine. What Can Kill Your Engine? Water in gas will stall a cars engine because it disrupts the combustion process. Gas floats on water (and sugar does dissolve in water), so the fuel line fills water rather than gas, or a mixture of water and gasoline.  This doesnt kill the engine, however, and can be cleared up by giving a fuel treatment a few hours to work its chemical magic.
